Ever wished you could show someone a picture of your screen or a window but didn't know how to do it?  Taking a Screenshot is useful when communicating with your Helpdesk technician, when preparing a PowerPoint presentation, etc.  It's very simple to do just by entering these key combinations:

  • PRINTSCRN (or, PrtSc, etc.) - copies the contents of your screen to the clipboard.
  • ALT+PRINTSCRN - copies only the active window to the clipboard (the window which has the blue title bar that is not dimmed).

Your keyboard may have a modifier key known as the FUNCTION key (Fn) to activate the PRINTSCRN function.  If so, you need to hold down the FUNCTION key while pressing the PRINTSCRN button.  The Fn key is usually placed to the right of the Control key, or it displaces the Control key altogether from the lower left corner of the keyboard.

Once you've copied it to your clipboard, simply paste it into Word, Paint, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, email, etc. (you cannot, however, paste it into NotePad).
